In addition to knowing where bed bugs live, it’s important to know the other signs to look for when watching for a bed bug infestation. Property managers can educate tenants to watch for these signs and notify the property manager as soon as possible. Early detection helps prevent the spread of the infestation.
The bugs themselves, ¼ inch long and reddish brown, are visible to the naked eye. However, they are typically not out and about during the day, so other signs need to be watched for, also.
Bed bugs love hiding inside box springs. Flipping the box spring over and shining a flashlight through the fabric will reveal evidence of an infestation, if present. Other places to check are behind the headboard, underneath cushions on chairs and couches, and behind hanging pictures. If present, the evidence of bed bugs will be most prevalent in the bedroom, so that is the best spot to begin the search. Signs to watch for are dark spots (dried blood in the bugs’ excrement), eggs, and tan casings (shed skin).
