Fall means cool breeze, shedding leaves, and a precursor to the cold, harsh winter. For rental homeowners and residents, this is a cue to prepare their nests to ensure safety, warmth, and avoid any unforeseen incidents.
The shift in weather means a thorough check and routine maintenance of your rental home to keep it in pristine condition.
Here are important steps to begin your fall maintenance and guide you in prepping your home for the colder months ahead:
Kickstart your fall preparation with a thorough safety inspection. Look around for any loose handrails, lifting or buckling carpets, or any other potential hazards that could lead to accidents. Early detection will ensure a safer living environment as you transition into colder months.
Check for any electrical hazards in your home. Ensure that no outlets feel warm to the touch as this could be a sign of an electrical issue that needs immediate attention.
Inspect your fire extinguishers to ensure they are fully charged and operational. Additionally, check your smoke, carbon monoxide, and security alarms, replacing batteries where necessary to ensure they are functioning properly.
Familiarize yourself with the gas and water shut-off valves in your home and review your household emergency procedures. This is crucial for quick action in case of emergencies like gas leaks or water pipe bursts.
Invest some time in cleaning or replacing air conditioning, heating, and range hood filters. Vacuum heat registers, intakes, vents, fans, radiators, and under appliances to prevent fire hazards and ensure a healthy, breathable indoor atmosphere.
Ensure all doors leading outside shut tightly to keep the cold breeze at bay. Check other doors and windows for ease of use, lubricate door hinges, and tighten screws as needed to ensure they are in good working order.
Deep clean your carpets and rugs to remove any accumulated dirt, ensuring a clean and pleasant living environment.
Clean the traps and drains in the dishwasher, sinks, and showers. Check all faucets for signs of dripping and change washers as needed. Grind ice cubes in the garbage disposal to clean the blades, then flush with hot water and baking soda to keep it functioning well.
For any plumbing fixture not used frequently, such as a laundry tub or spare bathroom sink, tub, or shower stall, run some water briefly to keep water in the trap and prevent sewer gasses from entering your home.
Lastly, step outside to tidy up, clear debris, and store outdoor hoses and similar items.
If during your fall maintenance, you come across any safety issues or needed repairs, please submit a ticket to the maintenance department.
